Founded in 1754, Prince Edward, with a population of over 20,450, has always been a leader in commerce and trade for the region.

Prince Edward County is a vibrant, rural community centrally located in Virginia, in an area known as Virginia’s Heartland. Founded in 1754, Prince Edward, with a population of over 20,450, has always been a leader in commerce and trade for the region. Farmville, the County seat for Prince Edward County, is the primary commercial center for the eight surrounding counties in the Heartland Region, serving over 150,000 citizens.

Central Location

Given its central geographic location in the Commonwealth, the County is only one hour away from major metropolitan areas such as Richmond, Lynchburg and Charlottesville. US 460 and US 15, two of Virginia’s primary east-west and north-south transportation corridors run through Prince Edward. These corridors provide direct access to four interstate highway systems: I-95, I-85, I-81 and I-64.

Education

Prince Edward County is home to two institutions of higher learning, Longwood University is a Division I state university with over 4,500 full-time students. Hampden-Sydney College, one of the oldest private, all male colleges in the United States, has a student body of 1,000 students. Centra Southside Community Hospital, the region’s only hospital is also located in the Town of Farmville.

Quality of Life

The economic environment in Prince Edward County is very robust with many new commercial businesses and industries locating to the area. Prince Edward is very pro-business with a 2,085 acre Enterprise Zone, which includes the Prince Edward Business Park, the Farmville Industrial Park and portions of the Town of Farmville.

Tourism

Tourism is also an important factor in the economic development for Prince Edward County. The new $77 million Manor Golf Course Community, Resort and Conference Center is currently under construction with the golf course already complete. In addition, Virginia’s newest state park, High Bridge Trail State Park, traverses Prince Edward County, stretching 39 miles from Burkeville to Pamplin City, Virginia.
